Dr. Richard Trietley was appointed President of Viterbo University in February 2022, following service as Vice President for Student Affairs, Interim Provost, and Executive Vice President for Student Success. Since joining Viterbo in 2017, Dr. Trietley has led several strategic initiatives, including the implementation of a sophomore live-on-campus requirement, expansion of athletic programs and residential facilities, and enhanced access to mental health services.
Prior to his tenure at Viterbo, Dr. Trietley served as Vice President for Student Affairs at St. Bonaventure University in New York. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel after 22 years of distinguished service, which included a combat deployment to Afghanistan as Brigade Executive Officer of the 1st Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, where he was second-in-command of 3,200 soldiers. His military education includes the Infantry Basic and Advance Courses, the combined Arms and Services Staff School, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army Ranger, Jumpmaster, Airborne, and Air Assault Courses. His military honors include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Ranger Tab, and Master Parachutist Wings.
A native of Olean, New York, Dr. Trietley earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from St. Bonaventure University, a Master’s Degree in teaching from Webster University, and a Doctor of Education in Higher Education Leadership from Maryville University in St. Louis. He and his wife, Michele, have two sons, Richard III and Kyle.
